Old shell explodes inside school in Handwara; sweeper injured

Srinagar: A sweeper was injured on Saturday after an old unexploded shell went off while he was cleaning a private school in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that the sweeper identified as Reyaz Ahmad Ahanger, son of Abdul Ahad Ahanger was cleaning the ‘Hillwill School’ when the shell went off, leaving him injured.

Reyaz was shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable, officials said.

The news agency quoted SP Handwara Dr GV Sandeep as saying that an investigation into the incident has revealed that it was an old shell which exploded, leading to the injuries to the sweeper.

He said Reyaz is stable as of now.
