Srinagar: Political leaders, including former chief ministers Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and former minister Sajad Lone today condemned the killing of two unarmed policemen by militants in Srinagar’s Baghat area.

Abdullah, who is also the National Conference vice-president, said the attack was “reprehensible” as the two policemen were unarmed and shot from behind.

“I condemn this act of militant violence & send my condolences to the families of these brave men,” he tweeted.

“What makes this attack even more reprehensible is that SgCT Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama and Ct Suhail Ahmad of Logripora were unarmed & shot in the back. Senseless & cowardly at the same time,” he added.

PDP president Mehbooba condemned the attack saying the cycle of violence only begets misery.

“Condemn the killing of two policemen in the Baghat attack. My heart goes out to their families & loved ones. This cycle of violence serves no cause & begets only misery,” she tweeted.

People’s Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone also condemned the killing of the policemen.

“We strongly condemn the killing of two policemen in a dastardly and savage act of senseless violence at Baghat today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Suhail Ahmad and Mohammad Yusuf in this hour of grief,” the party said.

“The killing of two policemen in Baghat area of Srinagar is highly condemnable and unfortunate. Violence has no place in a civilized society. There is an urgent need to put an end to these killings,” CPI(M) said while expressing sympathies with the families of the slain policemen.

In a statement, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) strongly condemned the killing of two police personnel and said the mindless attack has cost two more precious lives of police personnel, which was very anguishing and unfortunate.

JKPCC also condemned the killing of SPO Altaf Ahmad in Beerwah encounter, which left another cop injured and expressed serious concern over the current situation in the Valley.

Apni Party president Mohammad Altaf Bukhari termed the attack as barbaric and inhuman. “Violence is not a solution but a huge impediment in peace and progress of any society. In any of its manifestations, violent extremism is unacceptable, regardless of political, ideological or religious motivations,” Bukhari added.

He observed that it is highly unfortunate and heart-wrenching that Kashmir continues to lose precious lives to senseless violence which has only aggravated the sufferings of the people over the years.

“The attackers have no respect for human lives and are only adding to the tragedies of the ill-fated families which must be condemned by one and all,” he added, while extending condolences to the bereaved families.

National Conference leaders including Member Parliament Mohammad Akbar Lone, party general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and other leaders also condemned the attack.

“There is no place for such senseless acts in an emancipated world. The dastardly killings on the high-security airport road in itself raise the question mark on the security situation in Kashmir. I on behalf of my party express solidarity with the bereaved and pray for peace to the slain policemen,” Sagar said.
