SRINAGAR: National Youth Cops (NYC) volunteers Saturday held protest here to press for the ‘extension’ of their services.

Chanting slogans “do justice with NYC volunteers, extend our service” scores of NYC volunteers including girls appeared at Press Enclave here and staged a protest demanding extension in service.

They alleged that the government despite assurances did not extend their services instead recruited fresh volunteers eight months before their term is completed.

“We are highly qualified and deserve good jobs, but unemployment and poverty forced us to join as NYC volunteers. We worked tirelessly during lockdown while many of our colleagues tested positive for COVID-19. Now we receive calls that you have been terminated,” Insha a protesting volunteer told reporters.

She said the Union Sports Minister, Kiran Rijiju assured them extension in service after two years besides monthly honorarium.

“We were assured by Union Minister Kiran Rijiju that our services will be extended after two years besides we will also be given monthly honorarium. But it is unfortunate that government has terminated us eight months before our term is completed,” she added.

Protesting NUYC volunteers appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to impress upon the concerned authorities to extend their service failing which they would be forced to intensify their protest.
