Indian flying fox captured in Kulgam

Srinagar: One of the largest bats in the world, the Indian flying fox (also known as the greater Indian fruit bat) was captured by the Wildlife department in a village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday afternoon.

Indian flying fox is a species of megabat found in the Indian subcontinent. It is of interest as a disease vector, as it is capable of transmitting several viruses to humans.

Quoting sources, news agency KNO reported that the Indian large flying fox was captured by Wildlife sleuths in Sangas Karwat village of Kulgam.

The news agency quoted the Wildlife Warden South Division, Abdul Rouf Zargar as saying that they would release the mammal into the orchard after a medical checkup as it has some head injury.

A large number of people rushed to the spot and were seen clicking pictures of the mammal.
