Srinagar: A family from Chanapora locality of uptown Srinagar, Friday staged demonstrations here to protest alleged murder of their father by a youth, who they claimed is their neighbor working with Jammu and Kashmir Bank.

Family members of Abdul Majeed Baqal, 65, of Mini Housing Colony Chanapora, alleged that instead of lodging FIR and taking action against the culprit, police makes all-out efforts to convince the victim family for negotiation.

Scores of protesters including family members, relatives and immediate neighbors of the deceased, holding placards which read “hang the culprit, lodge FIR, and, we want justice” appeared at Press Enclave here this afternoon and staged protest to seek action against the “murderer”.

Talking to reporters, daughter of the deceased said that his father was beaten to death by one a footballer (name with-held), who she said works with J&K Bank.

“I, my mother and other family members were present when my father was beaten to death by his murderer; but it’s unfortunate that police instead of taking action against the accused is exerting pressure on us hush up the case,” she alleged.

She alleged that no one in the locality musters courage to go against the accused who she said belongs to an influential family. “No one in our locality is ready to go against the accused; police also makes dillydallying tactics to file the FIR,” she added.

Protesters appealed the Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, to look into the matter and make the police accountable for allegedly denying justice to the family.
