490 new COVID cases in J&K take infections tally past 20,000 mark
KAS officer among 12 fresh victims of COVID-19
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir registered 490 more novel coronavirus cases, taking the total number of infections past the 20,000 mark on Friday, while the death toll rose to 377 with 12 more fatalities, officials said.
There are 7,765 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), while 12,217 patients have recovered so far, according to the officials.
Two out of the 12 new fatalities were from the Jammu region, while 10 were from the Kashmir Valley, including a senior KAS officer Tassaduq Jeelani who succumbed to the infection today. The death toll from the pandemic rose to 377 — 349 in Kashmir and 28 in Jammu, the officials said.
Out of the 490 new cases, the highest number of 128 infections were from Srinagar, followed by 85 in Pulwama district. As many as 143 new COVID-19 cases were from Jammu, while 347 were from the Valley, taking the tally to 20,359, the officials said.
The new cases detected include 64 people who had returned to the Union territory recently, the officials added.
Officials said the 10 patients from Valley who died today include a 70-year-old male from Dragmulla Kupwara, a 54-year-old woman from Pampore Pulwama, a 52-year-old police Sub-Inspector from Khanda Budgam, a 62-year-old man from Qamarwari Srinagar, a 75-year-old man from Panzinara Srinagar, a 57-year-old woman from Rainawari Srinagar, a 75-year-old man from Arigam Tral, a 55-year-old woman from Fatah Kadal Srinagar and a senior Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) officer Tassaduq Jeealani.
An official from SKIMS Medical College Bemina said that the Tassaduq Jeelani, who was presently posted as Special Secretary Social Welfare department, was admitted in the hospital on July 14 and died due to cardiopulmonary arrest today. “Besides COVID-19, he was suffering from diabetes and other ailments,” he said.
Expressing grief over the untimely demise of senior KAS officer Tasaduq Jeelani, Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu said “he was a dedicated officer who worked with zeal and enthusiasm. It’s unfortunate that we lost him so early.”
In a condolence message, the Lt Governor has prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and forbearance to the bereaved family at this hour of grief.
