Eight injured in Ahgam Handwara explosion

Handwara: At least eight people including three children were injured in an explosion at Ahgam village in Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The injured were taken to the Handwara District Hospital from where two of them were later shifted to Srinagar for advanced treatment, doctors at the hospital said.

Ahgam village where the explosion took place is about three kilometers away from the encounter site where two militants and five security personnel including a Colonel and a Major were killed in an encounter.

Eye-witnesses said that scores of people assembled at Ahgam in Handwara area  to  watch the sanitisation operation by security forces. All of a sudden a blast occurred in which eight  people were  injured.

“We immediately rushed the injured away to the nearby medical facility for treatment. Thank God, all are stable,” said an eye-witness. He said it wasn’t clear what caused the explosion but those hurt received splinter injuries.

Residents of Ahgam said that the injured were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Handwara from where two were shifted to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.

Confirming the incident, a doctor at Sub District Hospital said that two injured persons were shifted to Srinagar hospital while six others are being treated in the local hospital

A police official confirmed the incident and said, “We are ascertaining the details what caused the explosion.” he said.
