Head constable killed, DCP injured in fresh clashes over CAA in northeast Delhi
New Delhi, Feb 24 : A Delhi Police head constable was killed and a deputy commissioner of police injured as clashes over the amended citizenship law broke out again in northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad and Maujpur on Monday, with protesters torching houses, shops and vehicles, and hurling stones at each other.
Violence between groups supporting and opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was also reported in the Chandbagh and Bhajanpura areas.
This is the second day of clashes in the city where US President Donald Trump will arrive on Monday evening.
Police fired tear gas shells and also resorted lathicharge to disperse the violent crowd of protesters.
Ratan Lal, a head constable attached to the office of the ACP Gokalpuri, was killed. Several police personnel, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdara, Amit Sharma, were injured while trying to quell the protests.
The police also imposed section 144 of the CrPC, which prohibits assembly of four or more people, in areas affected by violence in northeast Delhi.
There was heavy stone pelting in Maujpur, while police baton-charged to disperse protesters in Jaffrabad. Shops and houses were vandalised and set on fire in Maujpur and Bhajanpura.
A protestor was also seen moving towards a Delhi Police personnel with a gun in his hand. He shot a few rounds in the air.
According to officials, a fire tender was damaged by the protesters after it responded to a fire call in the area.
Kejriwal appeals to people to maintain peace
New Delhi, Feb 24 : After violence erupted in northeast Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said he has spoken to Lt Governor Anil Baijal who assured that more police personnel are being sent to the affected areas.

Taking to Twitter, the chief minister said violence by anyone will not be tolerated.
“I just spoke to the LG. He has assured that more police forces are being sent. Violence will not be tolerated by anyone. I request people to maintain peace. No solution will come out of violence,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.
In another tweet, he said,”The death of a head constable is very sad. He was also one of us. Please give up violence. Nobody benefits from violence. All problems will be solved peacefully, he said in another tweet.
Violence was also reported in northeast Delhi’s Chandbagh and Bhajanpura areas.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Baijal to restore law and order in the wake of the violence.
“Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in.
“I sincerely urge Hon’ble LG n Hon’ble Union Home Minister to restore law and order n ensure that peace and harmony is maintained. Nobody should be allowed to orchestrate flagrations (sic),” Kejriwal said in his earlier tweet.
Baijal instructed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to maintain law and orde in the city.
“Instructed @DelhiPolice and @CPDelhi to ensure that law and order is maintained in North East Delhi. The situation is being closely monitored. I urge everyone to exercise restraint for maintenance of peace and harmony,” Baijal tweeted.

Centre responsible for CAA clashes: Yechury
New Delhi, Feb 24 : CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday held the Centre responsible for the violence that has erupted in Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and appealed to all to maintain peace.
His comments come after a Delhi Police head constable was killed and a deputy commissioner of police injured as clashes over the amended citizenship law broke out again in northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Chand Bagh, with protesters torching houses, shops and vehicles, and hurling stones at each other.
“There is utmost need to maintain peace and calm. We appeal to everyone to not fall prey to rumours or incitements – Peace must be kept. The responsibility however, lies with the Union govt which has not made any attempt to address grievances of a large section of Indians,” Yechury tweeted. PTI
