10 years on, water filtration plant lying nonfunctional in Ganderbal village
Ganderbal, July 18: A decade ago, the residents of Gutlibagh village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district heaved a sigh of relief after a water filtration plant was earmarked for their village.
The residents were expecting to have access to safe drinking water but no one bore the fruits of filtration plant as the water supply scheme is yet to be made operational despite passage of more than a decade.
Local residents said that in 2007 money in lacs was spent to construct the water supply scheme but it is of no use for them as the same is lying nonfunctional. “We fetch drinking water from a stream, which is impure and dirty. Public Health Engineering (PHE) has turned a blind eye towards the issue. We have approached the concerned authorities several times but to no avail,” they said.
Locals alleged that the filtration plant was constructed to the benefit contractor .They asked, “Why wasn’t the plant made operational in all these years?”
Executive engineer PHE Ganderbal didn’t respond to phone call of this reporter.
