Srinagar, Jul 07: Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Junaid Azim Mattoo on Sunday said he has been diagnosed with a chronic bone-marrow disorder.

Taking to social networking site Twitter, Mattoo wrote: “After some recent health issues and consequent investigations in Delhi, I’ve been diagnosed with a chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (bone-marrow disorder) called Polycythemia Vera (PV). The treatment and management of the disorder was initiated immediately.”

“The prognosis, the doctors tell me, is “very good”. I’ve been told that – with proper management, healthy lifestyle choices and regular treatment and monitoring – I should be able to live a healthy, normal and productive life for many many years,” Matto wrote on Twitter.

“I look forward to being back to work this week and will continue my treatment schedule and regime while working. This is a battle I intend to fight and fight with conviction and positivity. I needed to put this out to dispel whispers and rumors about my health,” he tweeted.

“So I look forward to being back in Srinagar in the next couple of days and am grateful and humbled by the calls and messages. If anything, I intend to work harder – doing what I’ve set my heart on – delivering change in and ‘Reimagining Srinagar’ – our Srinagar. Cheers,” Mattoo tweeted.

Mattoo had won the election as a nominee of Sajad Gani Lone-led People’s Conference after he left the National Conference over its decision to boycott the civic polls. Mattoo had bagged 40 votes against 26 polled in favour of his Congress rival Ghulam Rasool Hajam.

As the SMC Mayor confirmed the news of his ailment, former chief minister took to Twitter and wished him a speedy recovery and good health.

“I’m terribly sorry to read this Junaid but relieved to know that you have the condition under control & that the prognosis is good. You are in our prayers, Allah Shifa de,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Naeem Akhtar also tweeted, “I’m sure you’ll fight it out and live long and healthy inshaAllah. Our best wishes for a purposeful life ahead for many many long years. God be with you.”
