Militant killed in Uri gunfight: Police

Baramulla, Jun 22: Police on Saturday said a foreign militant, believed to be affiliated with JeM, was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Uri area of the north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“On a credible input a cordon and search operation was launched at Bujthalan Boniyar area in Baramulla by police and security forces. During searches, militants fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter,” said a police spokesman.

He said in the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of the gunfight.

“From the incriminating material recovered from the site of encounter, the killed militant has been identified as foreigner from Pakistan and is believed to be from proscribed outfit JeM,”

“Search for the possibility of more militants in the area is on. It seems the slain militant was part of a group that had managed to sneak in. His associates may be hiding somewhere or gone back to other side of the fence. Mopping operation is on,” a local news agency quoted a senior police officer as saying.

Police spokesman said incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police, he said, has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter.

Police said “it was a clean operation — no collateral damage happened during the encounter.”

The spokesman also requested the people to not venture inside encounter zone saying such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any.”
