Protests rock Sopore against militant killing

Sopore, May 10: Police and paramilitary forces on Friday fired scores of teargas shells to disperse protesters who took to the streets at model town in the apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district against the killing of a local militant.

The apple town also observed shutdown over the killing with shops and educational institutions remaining closed while very thin movement of traffic was witnessed on the roads.

Reports said that group of youth appeared at model town in Sopore, native locality of the slain militant, and pelted the forces with stones.

They said the forces responded by lobbing scores of teargas shells.

Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi, son of Mushtaq Ahmad of Model Town Sopore, was killed in a gunfight with the security forces at Ramnagri in Herpora area of Shopian early today.

His body was handed over to family at Police Control Srinagar for last rites.

Reports said hundreds of people joined his funeral and later he was buried at martyars’ graveyard amid pro-freedom slogans.
