Pulwama villagers aghast over supply of contaminated water

Pulwama: Residents of Wookh village of Kakapora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have accused the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department of supplying contaminated drinking water, putting them at a risk of  many disease.

A group of villagers told Kashmir Images that in 2006 the water supply scheme was made functional but till date the supply lines carry contaminated water.

“We are near about 300 households dependent on this water scheme but due to the supply of contaminated water most of the villagers particularly children have become prone to different diseases,” said a villager Bashir Ahmad Bhat.

The villagers further said traces of dead rats, sparrows and snakes are found frequently in the filter tank adding that many times they had sent representatives to higher authorities, but no one paid any heed to their genuine concern.

When contacted, Executive Engineer concerned told Kashmir Images: “It it is due to turbidity the water supply gets contaminated and we will look into the matter.”
