Tarigami urges govt to fine-tune SOP for movement of forces’ convoys
Srinagar, Mar 16: Highlighting the hardships faced by people in view of restrictions on the movement of private vehicles when government forces’ convoys move on national highway, CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami has the government to fine-tune the standard operating procedures in this regard.
In a statement here, the former legislator from Kulgam said the rules in vogue are giving tough time to the commuters and causing heavy traffic jams. The commuters who travel towards their respective workplaces have to wait for long durations till the convoys pass the area.
Patients, who have to reach to the hospitals are the worst suffers while students, office-goers and business-people too have to bear the brunt of traffic restrictions during the movement of convoys, Tarigami pointed out.
“The security concerns are to be taken into consideration, but at the same time it should not be problematic for the common people. Ambulances and vehicles carrying patients must be allowed to pass even during the movement of convoys. A patient can’t wait and in some cases it can prove disastrous,” Tarigami said.
He suggested that the timings of convoy movements must be devised so as there is no inconvenience to the general public.
“There is a need to fine-tune and polish the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the movement of security forces’ convoys so that there is no clash with the movement of civilian traffic. The timing of the security forces’ convoy could be fixed such that it is different than the timing when highways and other roads witness peak civilian traffic movement,” he said.
Tarigami also shared with media a letter in this regard, which he said has already been submitted to the Governor Satya Pal Malik on March 12, 2019.
