Srinagar, Mar 15:  Various trade bodies held a sit-in protest at the city-center Lal Chowk Friday against the summoning of Hurriyat-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to New Delhi by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and crackdown on religious leaders.

The trade bodies who had gathered during the protest condemned the summoning of Mirwaiz and termed the move as a “direct interference with the religious affairs of the people”.

Carrying placards with messages like ‘NIA summon to Mirwaiz not acceptable’, ‘Victimisation and harassment intolerable’, ‘Religious interference intolerable’, ‘Stop religious interference’, the protesting traders said the Mirwaiz is an “institution unique to Kashmiri’s cultural ethos” and that the Muslims of Kashmir cutting across political and ideological divides have a deep emotional and religious association with the pulpit of Jama Masjid.

The sit-in was attended by the representatives of various organisations which included KEA, KTMF, KCCI, KTMF(R), Beopar Mandal S R Gunj, and transport bodies.
