Woman drug peddler detained under PSA in Jammu

Jammu, Mar 13:  A woman drug peddler was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) here on Wednesday, a police spokesperson said.

Reena alias Roopa, originally hails from Rajasthan’s Pindi area and was living in Jammu for the past several years. Several cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered against her at different police stations since 2016, he said.

Earlier also, she had been detained under various sections of the Criminal Procedure Code for involvement in unlawful activities, especially peddling of narcotics, he added.

“Keeping in view her activities and criminal record, her preventive detention was recommended by police and approved by the divisional commissioner, Jammu,” the spokesperson said.

He said Reena lived with her husband Rajesh alias Babi in Rajeev Nagar, Narwal on the outskirts of the city.

The first case under the NDPS Act was registered against her at Gangyal police station in 2016 and three more cases were registered at Bahu Fort police station in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

In two separate operations, three drug peddlers were arrested along with contraband substances on Wednesday in Reasi district and R S Pura in Jammu district, the spokesperson said.

A resident of Dharababa village, Rafiq Khan, was arrested after 200 grams of charas was seized from him during frisking at Serbad in Reasi’s Katra area, he said.

Two other alleged drug peddlers, identified as Umar Ahmad Khan of Pulwama and Shakeel Ahmad of Ramban, were arrested during checking of vehicles in Choga area of R S Pura, the spokesperson said.

Police seized 50 kilograms of poppy straw from their possession, he said.

All the three accused were booked under the NDPS Act, he said.
