Sumo drivers from south Kashmir stage protest

Accuse traffic authorities of harassment

Srinagar, March 6: Sumo drivers from south Kashmir today staged protest outside traffic headquarters against alleged harassment by the officials concerned.

Shouting slogans “do justice with poor, stop harassing drivers” dozens of sumo drivers assembled outside SSP Traffic office at Residency Road here to protest alleged harassment by the traffic officials at Panthachowk.

The protesting drivers said that in case the vehicles coming from south Kashmir are barred from moving towards Srinagar, then the authorities should issue an official order in the regard and not harass drivers unnecessarily.

They alleged that traffic officials including DySP and his subordinates at Panthchowk seize their vehicles and then ask them to visit traffic headquarters in the evening.

Protesting drivers said that their vehicles are seized at Panthachowk and huge fines are charged from them.

“We cannot bear this injustice anymore. Our vehicles are seized every now and then without any provocation. We appeal the authorities to issue a formal order barring vehicles from south Kashmir to move towards Srinagar,” said Mohammad Ayub.

The protesting drivers appealed the IG and SP Traffic to look into the issue so that poor drivers do not suffer.
