Srinagar, February 10: Due to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway for the last almost a week, hundreds of Kashmir-bound passengers have been stranded in Jammu and government must take immediate steps to airlift them to Kashmir, CPI(M) leader and former MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami said in a statement issued today.

“As per media reports, almost 800 people, including women, elderly and children, are stranded due to closure of the highway for last six days due to snowfall and landslides and they are suffering immensely,” Tarigami said.

He said that these passengers are stranded at Jammu bus stand without food and shelter. Many stranded families reportedly have alleged that prices of commodities have been hiked as there was no market checking to put rates in order.

“The Governor’s administration should provide free ration and accommodation to the stranded passengers and expedite work on the highway especially from Banihal to Ramban stretch which often remains closed due to landslides and shooting stones, he said.

“Alternately, the government must immediately make arrangements to airlift the stranded passengers from Jammu to Kashmir,” he further said.
