Family rejects police version

Baramulla, Feb 06: Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday claimed to have solved the mysterious death of a fitness trainer who was found hanging in a building near his gym in Azad Gunj area on December 18, 2018.

The death of Azim Nazir of Uranbuwa Boniyar, who had been working as a fitness trainer at a gym at Azad Gunj for over a decade, had triggered massive protests by his relatives and Uri residents who claimed that he was murdered.

Following the protests, the police had set up a special investigation team to probe his death.

A police spokesman said the deceased had committed suicide after breakup with a girl from Rajasthan with whom he was in a relationship.

“It was revealed during the course of investigation that the deceased was in relationship with a girl (name withheld) from Rajasthan and the couple had recently parted ways which the deceased was unable to come to terms with. Unable to bear the shock, he hanged himself,” spokesman said in a statement.

The electronic, circumstantial, medical and forensic evidence also established the hanging by rope, he said.

“The statements of witnesses who had knowledge of the circumstances and events thereof, recorded before the court substantiated the same,” said the spokesman.

He said the injuries in eye and ear were also established by medical and forensic experts to have been inflicted after the death, most likely by rodents. “Accordingly, the matter has been closed as a case of suicide,” said the police spokesman.

However, family of the youth refused to buy the police version and termed it injustice.

“It is a concocted story. We are not satisfied with the police version. First, police said that my son was murdered outside and then was brought to the gym. Police also registered case under section 302 (murder), but now they say it was a suicide,” Nazir Ahmed Khan, father of the slain youth told ‘Kashmir Images’.

“If my son had committed suicide, then who closed the shutter of his gym? Where did the injury marks on my son’s body come from? Police has failed to answer our questions and doubts,” the father said, adding that he has lost faith in the police.

He said he will leave no stone unturned to indentify his son’s killers and will bring them to book.
