Wayil Bridge repairment takes a toll on commuters in Ganderbal

‘Traffic movement suspended for next 12 days’

Ganderbal, Jan 30: Commuters and pedestrians are suffering a great deal in Ganderbal as vital Wayil Bailey Bridge built over Nallah Sind on Srinagar-Sonmarg highway is being repaired with authorities suspending traffic movement on it for next 12 days.

According to locals, it is a temporary bridge (Bailey bridge) which is being repaired here while as the public demand for construction of a concrete bridge is echoing since two decades but to no avail.

A commuter said, “Manigam is located at a distance of 300 meters but as the Wayil Bridge is undergoing repairment, people have to take an alternative route which is around 8 kms long.”

“Some pedestrians​  are risking their lives as they walk through freezing Nallah Sind in order to cross to the other side of it,” he added.

Tawseef Wani, a local resident alleged that workers who are repairing the bridge are allowing​  some pedestrians to walk over it which is life threatening.”

Pedestrians said administration should have constructed a make shift footbridge for pedestrians before starting the repairing work on it.

When contacted executive Engineer R&B Ganderbal said, “We will put in place temporary arrangements​for the pedestrian who have to cross the Nallah.”
