Protesters block roads for many hours, leave commuters to suffer

Ganderbal, Jan 22: Irked by delay in repairing of transformers and excessive power curtailment, residents of Malshahibagh, Gangerhama and adjoining villages protested here against Power Development Department (PDD) and blocked Srinagar-Leh highway and Ganderbal- Manasbal road respectively.

The protesters blocked the roads for many hours due to which commuters had to suffer.

Protesters hailing from Malshibagh told Kashmir Images that they are reeling under darkness and PDD is not following the curtailment schedule. “We are suffering badly but there no one to solve our problem,” they said.

Raising slogans against PDD, protesters said PDD is apathetic towards their problems. “We pay our electricity bills without fail but get power supply for few hours daily and from last two days we are reeling under darkness. We have been left with no option but to hit the roads,” they added.

They further said that their power transformer was damaged many days ago but PDD has failed to repair it.

The protesters were later pacified by DSP Ganderbal and Tehsildar. They assured them that the issue will brought into the notice of concerned authorities.

Meanwhile, commuters expressed displeasure over blocking of roads by the protesters. One of the commuter said, “Blocking road is not the right way to protest. Students, patients and employees suffer a lot .The protesters should have visited the office of concerned department to register their protest.”

When this reporter contacted AEE PDD Ganderbal on phone, he didn’t attend the call.
