Demanding release of pending wages, MGNREGA laborers stage protest in Srinagar

Srinagar, January 17: Laborers working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from different parts of Baramulla district in north Kashmir today held protest here against pending wages.

The slogan shouting laborers who had assembled at Press Enclave staged protest against the government for withholding their wages for the past one and half years.

They said nor does the authority’s release their pending wages neither allows them visit Civil Secretariat to get their pending wages released.

“We are poor laborers gets rupees 180 per day, I failed to understand why don’t the government release our wages pending for the past one a half year. Why this injustice with poor people who work day night under the centrally sponsored scheme,” said Shakeel Ahmad a laborer from Tangmarg.

He said near about nine thousand laborers from Baramulla district engaged under MGNREGA scheme have been without wages.

The protesting laborers threatened to hit streets along with their families incase the government does not release their wages well on time.

“Why doesn’t the government pay us on time if we work tirelessly, we cannot wait anymore as our families keeps on suffering? In case the government does not release our wages we will be forced to take streets along with our families to protest,” he added.
