Mehbooba expresses outrage at Jama Masjid incident

Srinagar, Dec 31: Hurriyat-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday asked people to remain vigilant of what he termed as “anti-movement elements”.

Addressing a gathering in the premises of Jama Masjid today, Mirwaiz called for unity to expose black sheep involved in desecration of the grand mosque.

“People of Jammu and Kashmir have been sacrificing since 1931 for their rights. We need to safeguard the sacrifices by the people to get their right to self-determination, freedom and their religious and political aspirations,” Mirwaiz said.

He said people have the greatest attachment to the grand mosque and any ill-treatment to it would not be tolerated.

He also urged people to make the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) programme of ‘Youm-i-Taqadus’ on Friday a success.

Meanwhile, Meanwhile, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday rang up Hurriyat-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and conveyed her outrage over the desecration of historic Jama Masjid.

Taking to Twitter, Mehbooba said Jama Masjid and its pulpit are the most important landmarks of Kashmir’s religious and cultural moorings.

“Appearance of a few youth with IS flag in Jama Masjid Srinagar is desecration of the most important institution of Kashmir’s religious, social life. Called @MirwaizKashmir, Umar sahheb to convey my outrage,” Mehbooba wrote on her twitter handle.

She added: “Jama Masjid & its pulpit are most important landmarks of our religious, cultural moorings. Can’t allow barbaric forces to defile it in the name of Islam.”
