Official convicted in corruption case

Srinagar, Sep 26: A government official was convicted on Wednesday of corruption charge at the court of Anti-Corruption Judge, Srinagar, Ravinder Nath Wattal.

The official – then Senior Assistant, D.C Office Budgam, Ghulam Mehdi Pandit, son of Ghulam Hassan Pandit of Iskanderpora, Budgam — was accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3000 from a person for processing his file regarding providing of a pathway. He was caught accepting bribe red-handed by the Vigilance sleuths, a Vigilance spokesman said.

The court sentenced the accused to undergo one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15000 under the Prevention of Corruption Act and six months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2500 under Section 161 RPC.

Spokesman also informed that a corruption case was registered against a former ZEO Tangdhar Mohammad Ashraf Bhat and concerned dealing clerk Mohammad Ashraf Poswal, senior assistant and others for their alleged complicity in fraud and embezzlement in scholarship funds of Pahari-speaking/Gujjar-Bakarwal students in Education department Zone Tangdhar of Kupwara district during the financial year 2010-11.
