Restrictions imposed in Srinagar downtown

Srinagar, May 11: Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar on Friday in view of a protest called by separatist against civilian deaths in a clash between protestors and government forces after an encounter in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Restrictions, under Section 144 of the CrPc, were imposed by authorities in five police station areas of the summer capital, the official said.

The curbs are in force in the Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal and Maharajgunj police station areas of Srinagar, he said, adding the restrictions were imposed “as a precautionary measure, to maintain law and order, and prevent any untoward incident.”

On May 06, five Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in an encounter in Shopian, even as five civilians died during clashes between protesters and government forces near the encounter site. Another civilian injured in these clashes also succumbed few days later.

Separatists — Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, had asked people to hold peaceful protests against the recent civilian killings after Friday congregational prayers today.

While Geelani is already under house-detention, Mirwaiz was put under house arrest this morning, even as Malik too continues to remain in police custody.

Meanwhile, scores of political leaders and activists today offered funeral prayers in absentia for the civilians killed in forces’ action last weekend in Srinagar and Shopian.

Scores of activists took out a march from Maisuma to protest the killings and later joined by hundreds of people also offered funeral prayers in absentia for the slain civilians.
