‘No justification to ask for CBI probe’

Srinagar, Apr 27: Flaying Bar Council of India (BCI) for calling for suggesting that the Kathua and Jammu lawyers’ demand for CBI probe into the Kathua rape and murder was justified, CPI(M) leaders and MLA Kulgam Mohammd Yusuf Tarigami today said that BCI panel has no authority to submit such a report.

“The Supreme Court had not directed them to file report about their opinion on justifiability of a CBI investigation of the Kathua case. They were only directed to enquire and find out whether the local lawyers had obstructed the filing of the charges by the police/the trial proceedings,” Tarigami said in a statement here.

He said CBI investigation is a demand made by the accused and Hindu Ekta Manch. “The accused have no right to demand such investigation. They can’t choose the investigating authority. The attempt of the BCI is to give legitimacy to this illegal demand of the accused and the Hindu Ekta Manch and to influence the investigating officers/police, prosecution and thereby deny fair trial to the victim,” he alleged.
