Army resumes searches in Kupwara forests after overnight gunfight with infiltrators

Srinagar, April 27: Army on Friday launched a massive search operation in forests of Jumgund in Keran sector along Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of north Kashmir following a brief gunfight overnight.

The army has also sounded a high alert in the sector to find out any militants who might have infiltrated also.

The searches were started early on Friday and when this report was filed it was going on.

An army official said that the searches were started on 7:45 am and are going on to find out any militant body who might have got killed in the exchange of fire overnight.

Sources said that army has also pressed sniffer dogs into service to find out any militant body.

Army’s 16 Madras manning the Gharat Post along the LoC in Keran opened fire after detecting some suspicious movement at around 7:55 pm last night in the area.

A group of three to four militants believed to be the infiltrators returned the fire ensuing a brief exchange of gunfire, sources had said.

A senior army officer based in north Kashmir told GNS that the movement of the infiltrators was challenged by the soldiers after they tried to sneak in.
