High Court gets first woman judge

Srinagar: History was made today as first woman was appointed as the judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

The Supreme Court of India today appointed three advocates and one judicial officer as judges of Jammu and Kashmir High Court while deferring the decision on the appointment of another judge (an advocate), who too appeared in the recommended list.

The Supreme Court approved appointment of Wasim Sadiq Nargal, Nazir Ahmad Beig, Sindhu Sharma (all advocates) and Rashid Ali Dar, judicial officer as High Court judges.

Sindhu Sharma, who was appointed High Court judge today, is the first woman judge in J&K High Court’s history.

Sindhu, a reputed advocate, is daughter of Retired Justice O P Sharma. She was the first lady advocate of J&K who was earlier appointed as Assistant Solicitor General of India.

In order to assess merit and suitability of the above named recommendees for elevation to the HC we have carefully scrutinized the material placed in the file which includes the views of the CM, Governor, complaints against the recommendations, and reports/comments thereon of intelligence agencies, their age, income, statistics of reported/unreported judgments and pro vono cases handled by the bar members, as well as the observation made by the department of justice in the file, the order said.

However, as regards Showkat Ahmad Makroo (advocate), the order said, “… we are of the considered view that consideration of his case can wait. The proposal for his elevation is accordingly deferred for the present.”
