Budgam, Mar 27: Doctors at the Aga Syed Yousuf Memorial (ASYM) district hospital here achieved a major feat when they performed a procedure which they claim was done for the first time in the Valley.

Dr Arshad Rashid, the Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeon (CLS), who was heading the surgery team said: “Our hospital became the first in the Valley to perform Transversus Abdominis Muscle Release (TAR) with abdominal wall reconstruction for a giant ventral hernia.”

He said the patient, a 36-year-old female, with a prior history of failed hernioplasty, has been discharged and is doing well.

He said the defect in the abdominal wall was 22-cm length and 16-cm width. “After doing TAR, linea alba (fibrous structure that runs down the midline of the abdomen in humans and other vertebrates) was recreated and 30 by 30 cm prolene mesh was placed in the preperitoneal space (space in the abdominal cavity).”

Explaining TAR, he said, “TAR is a posterior component separation technique devised in 2007 and has many advantages over anterior component separation technique, including less of flap necrosis.”

TAR decreases mesh infection and has less rates of recurrence, he said.

The surgery, under the logistic support from Medical Superintendent Dr Deeba, was performed besides Dr. Arshad, by Dr Sheikh Junaid, senior consultant, and Dr Jamsheed Khan. The anaesthesia team included Dr Iqbal Fateh Khan, who was assisted by Kishanjeet.

While talking to ‘Kashmir Images’ Dr, Deeba said, “My doctors are doing a great job and I appreciate their work.”
