Army establishes self help group to empower women

Srinagar: The Army has established a Self-Help Embroidery Group in Kupwara that is assisting the women in producing traditional embroidery goods and sell these in the local market.

A defense spokesman said that the self help group has been registered as ‘Murawat Kashmiri Arts’ and is a big step towards empowering the women from the under developed villages of Kupwara district.

To further this initiative, an interactive event was organised at Kalaruch wherein local sarpanches, community elders and the self help group members were present. Maj Gen C Bansi Ponnappa and Nithya Ponnappa interacted with the women participants of the self help group and congratulated them for having successfully produced Shawls, Summer and Winter Suits, Stoles and Pheran with intricate and beautiful embroidery.

Nithya Ponnappa also handed over the payment received after selling of first lot of products through a contracted vendor arranged by the Army.
