Geelani again barred from offering Friday prayers

Srinagar: February 23: Chairman Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani could not attend the Friday congregational prayers due to his continuous house arrest, a spokesperson said.

A spokesman, in a statement issued today lashed out at state police and authorities for barring Huriyat chairman from offering congregational prayers and said, “Geelani and other resistance leaders are barred from performing religious obligations which is interference in religious matters and clear violation of UN charter wherein performing religious obligations have been recognized as fundamental right.”

The spokesman said that there is no constitutional and moral justification to curb the peaceful political activities of Geelani and stop him from performing religious obligations.

“Geelani continues to be under house detention for past eight years. His residence has been turned into a sub-jail and continuous detention is taking heavy toll on his health,” statement added.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said, APHC Chairman has called an executive meeting of its constituent parties on February 24. All constituent members have been requested to attend meeting at 10.30 am sharp.
