SPO turned militant among 2 killed in Shopian

Shopian: Amid heavy snowfall and rains, two militants were killed in an encounter in a village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Sources said that on a specific information about the presence of militants, Army’s 23 Para, J&K Police’s SOG and CRPF cordoned Memendar village Khudpora in Shopian district around 7:00 pm on Saturday.

As the forces started a door to door search operation, the militants hiding in a house opened fire, triggering an encounter, official sources said.

Two militants, both locals, were killed and a trooper of 23 Para sustained injuries, sources said.

Sources further said that one of the killed militant was identified as Showkat Ahmad, who was an SPO in J&K Police and had decamped with a AK 47 Rifle on August 25 from PS Shopian.

Another slain militant was identified as Irfan, who reportedly hailed from village Khudpora.

Sources said that though no exchange of fire was reported from past sometime, the security forces had not called off the operation when this report was being filed.
