Two militants killed in Sopore encounter

Srinagar, Sep 25: Two unidentified militants were Tuesday killed in an encounter with government forces in Sopore area of Baramulla district of north Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

He said government forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowpora area of Tujjer in Sopore this morning following information about presence of militants in the area.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire on government forces, spokesman said.

“In retaliatory action, two militants have been killed so far,” he said, adding that some arms, ammunition and incriminating material has been recovered from the site of encounter.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants is being ascertained, he said, adding police has registered a case in this regard and the investigation has been initiated.

The police spokesman further said that one of the killed militants has been identified as Abdul Majeed Mir @ Sameer S/O Bashir Ahmad Mir R/O Tujar-Sharief Bomai Sopore while the identity of another militant is still being ascertained.

They were affiliated with LeT. Moreover Case FIR No. 73/2018 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Bomia and investigation is in progress, police spokesman said.
