Train service suspended on Srinagar-Banihal route after protests

Srinagar, May 25: Train service was suspended on the Srinagar-Banihal route on Friday following protests in Arwani area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The Srinagar-Banihal train service has been suspended due to the security reasons, GNS news agency  quoted a railway official as saying.

He said the service was suspended as a precautionary measure in the wake of protests at Arwani.

However, train service from Srinagar to Baramulla and vice-versa operated as per the schedule, the official said.

According to the report, a group of people today morning took to streets and staged a protest against the arrest of several youth during nocturnal raids in the area.

The protesters stopped a train at Arwani to demand the release of all the youth arrested by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of police during raids in the night.

A police officer confirmed that they have picked up some youths from the area for questioning in connection with the firing incident on May 15 and grenade attack on May 23.

On May 15, an SPO was killed and a police constable was injured after militants attacked a police vehicle in Pazalpora area of Bijbehara.

On May 23, ten persons suffered injuries after some unknown persons lobbed a grenade on a government forces’ vehicle which missed the target and exploded on the roadside.
